Admiralty
We represent protection and indemnity clubs that provide insurance for many of the ships coming to Guyana. We deal with all the familiar problems encountered by ships, both contentious and non-contentious, including arrests arising from accidents and claims for wages and damaged cargo. We advise masters, obtain surveys, note protests, negotiate settlements and advise on or deal with stowaways and medical emergencies. Our admiralty practice is the largest in Guyana.
Banking
We have represented banking or related clients throughout our existence and today represent several of the leading banks in Guyana. We advise on and are engaged in litigation in all aspects of banking law and practice, including related areas such as guarantees, promissory notes, bills of exchange, letters of credit, bankruptcy, receiverships, mortgages, execution and interests in property.
Contract
We prepare and advise on a wide variety of contracts ranging from banking and insurance to mining and forestry. We are frequently requested to examine contracts for compliance with Guyana laws.
Conveyancing
Our conveyancing department is the largest and most experienced in Guyana. We prepare and advise on agreements of sale for immovable property, handle conveyances of registered and unregistered land, register mortgages, vest title from the estates of deceased persons, perform title and encumbrance research and undertake a variety of other non-contentious work.
Commercial
The wide spectrum of legal work generated by commercial activity has always formed a substantial part of our practice. Much of the litigation that arises from these matters is contested, with some matters reaching the Court of Appeal, where we have had the opportunity to assist in developing Guyana’s jurisprudence.
Corporate
We are a leading provider of legal services in the corporate field, including company formation, administration and dissolution, compliance with the requirements of the Companies Act and other applicable legislation, and advice on all aspects of law affecting our corporate clients. We provide information on corporate law and practice to a number of international agencies and have for the past two years assisted the World Bank with the Business Entry section of its Doing Business publication.
Forestry
Over eighty percent of Guyana is covered by forests which are protected by the Guyana Forestry Commission. We have represented the GFC but also advise companies engaged in developing the forest products industry by selective and sustainable exploitation of forest resources.
Insurance
We represent leading companies in Guyana engaged in most areas of insurance activity. We advise on insurance contracts and claims of various types and represent our insurance clients in their litigation.
Intellectual Property
Our trade marks and patents practice is the largest in Guyana. Mr. Rafiq T. Khan is recognised as one of the country’s leading intellectual property experts, has represented the country at meetings of the World Intellectual Property Organisation and is regularly requested to assist WIPO with keeping its information on the status of intellectual property law in Guyana up to date.
Mining
Guyana is known to be rich in mineral resources. Bauxite, gold and diamond mining provide a substantial and growing portion of Guyana’s GDP. We have represented Guyana Mining Enterprise, the state owned company which at one time mined all of our bauxite. We currently represent companies involved in gold and diamond mining and prospecting and perform due diligence studies relating to the status of mining companies and the validity of mining and prospecting licences.
Notarial
Swearing, certification, legalisation and notarisation services are provided by our senior partner, who is both a Notary Public & Commissioner of Oaths and one of our senior clerks, who is a Commissioner of Oaths.
Probate & Administration
Our comprehensive service includes estate planning advice, preparation of wills, obtaining grants of representation and resealing of probates and letters of administration. We also undertake the administration of some estates either by direct appointment as executor or as the attorney for a personal representative who is absent from Guyana.
Public Law
Public law litigation has increased in Guyana over the past twenty years. We have been increasingly engaged in this field as we represent several statutory bodies and state owned organisations against which public law remedies are sought.
Revenue Law
We advise on various aspects of tax law and handle tax appeals.
Torts
We have wide experience in dealing with the full range of tort matters and have particular expertise in defamation, nuisance and negligence.
Trusts and Pension Schemes
We handle the establishment of trusts and pension schemes and provide ongoing advice and assistance in relation to changes in trustees and other related matters.
